Thought you would like to know about our Kenyan holiday - it was brilliant.
Shan Rufus and Migwi met us at the airport and we were whisked off to a hotel, which was very accommodating as we were starving and they produced a great meal even though it was 11.30pm.
We left the next morning the the land cruiser - so cool and comfy! - for Lake Naivasha where "Out of Africa" was filmed. Here we were introduced to our first wild animals - giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, etc. The guide who took us round was smashing and very knowledgeable about birds, which I love as I am a keen birdwatcher!
The cook was wonderful - conjuring up amazing meals all the time and we even had a cooked breakfast, plus lots of fresh fruit. Lunch was good, and the evening meal was always three courses - a homemade soup, BBQ meat, roast chicked, African style veg, potatoes and rice - all scrummy. One day he made Zena a birthday cake in a tin on the barbeque - amazing!
In all we covered a lot of kilometres so I wont bore you with the whole itinerary but after Naivasha we went to Lake Baringo, Lake Nakuru and Nakuru National Park where there are over 2 million flamingoes, white rhinos etc. ending up in the Masai Mara for three days doing game drives and seeing the Masai village which was brilliant. My photos are amazing, it was really a good holiday and I can see why Shan has fallen for the country because it is beautiful. She and Ruf obviously worked hard on the itinerary, and had done a lot of research on hotels as ours was lovely, and reasonable.
We got so close to the animals, too, but I felt safe all the time. Once we were watching a cheetah in the Masai Mara and it got up and walked towards us. I thought it was going to go between the two vehicles but suddenly it jumped on the bonnet of ours!!
So all in all an excellent holiday. With Shans marketing and organisation and Rufus expertise - he s a brilliant driver and very knowledgeable about the wildlife - they make a fantastic team.
